New Family Orientation

There will be an orientation meeting for new families on Thursday, Jan 8th at 9A. It is highly recommended that you come. You will receive information regarding procedures/ policies, as well as have the chance to ask questions. This meeting is also open to any returning families who would like the opportunity to ask questions of board members. This meeting will be held in the sanctuary. There is no childcare provided for this meeting, however, you are welcome to bring your children.

Rebelution Cancelled

Due to lack of interest, the Rebelution class taught by Robin Beebe has been cancelled.

Please pick up your check from Wendy on Thursday afternoon (Robin will be returning them to Wendy when she arrives.).

Thanks.

Spring Semester Enrollment

We will start accepting new family registrations for spring at 9am on December 4. If new families arrive early, they can have a seat in the sanctuary.

Please see the 2009 Spring Class Schedule for classes with openings, classes that are full and those that require teacher approval before you can add them. The full classes are indicated in Red. A few of the high school classes in red have a few openings, but at this point in the school year, new students would need prior teacher approval before they could add the class. Please check with Mary for openings and related questions. The classes in green need to have teacher approval before students can add these classes.

We have a few slots available in the private lessons for piano, flute and guitar. Please check with Mary to see if the times available work with your student's schedule.

Openings in Voice and Vocal Lessons

Voice Class- All ages welcome (including moms!). There are still a few spots open. Come join as we learn about vocal technique, performing, harmonization, and basic music theory. (1:30-2:30)

Women's Vocal Ensemble - Grades 7-12 (3:30-4:30). There are still openings for this ensemble. We will work on vocal technique and various choral music styles. This is a great opportunity to experience being a part of vocal performing group.

Registration Information

Please be advised: The Civil War class has been cancelled.

Please plan to sign up for volunteer shifts when you turn in your registration materials.

You will need your completed registration forms, along with checks for the first month’s tuition and materials fees for all classes, and the registration fee ($35) to enroll for the Spring Semester. These checks will not be released until the first Thursday of December. There will be no payment due in January. Spring payments will be due Feb, March, and April. Insurance and parking are annual fees so are not due for Spring.

If you do not plan to return, please turn in a drop form so that we can release your spots to other students.

If you have unsettled fees due for fall 2008, you will need to settle those with Wendy before you may register. If these are not settled, your registration will be held out until they are settled.

Here are the changes being made for Spring Semester:

Lisa Haskell will be changing her 9:00 a.m. class to Ultimate Kid Concoctions, grades K-4. Her 3:30 class will be Poetry Projects with Pizaazzzz, grades 3-7.

Lisa Haskell’s 2:30 Pirate class will be changing to Cowboys and Indians.

Robin Beebe will be adding “Joining the REBELution” for 9th-12th grades (using the book Do Hard Things by Brett and Alex Harris)

Emily McCoy will be adding a choir for 7th-12th grades at 3:30.

Maureen Schenk’s Economics class will be changing to Government.

Bob Hunt will be adding a Civil War class at 3:30 for 5th-8th.

Tuition Information

Please remember that tuition is due on the first Thursday of each month. If you’ll bring your checks already made out, you’ll save yourself some time on Thursday. You don't need to place them in an envelope. Just drop them in either tuition box; there is one near the scanner and one on Wendy's table. Thank You Very Much!!

If you forget to drop your check in the box and want to avoid late fees, you may mail your checks to me at:

Wendy Barnett
8405 Northshore Dr.
Knoxville, TN 37919

Checks must be received by the following Tuesday to avoid late fees

New Family Liaison

Thursday Connection has a new contact person for those interested in joining our group. Manuela Ptacek is our liaison for new families. She will be happy to answer questions for any new families interested in our group. Manuela may be reached at 531-1719 or at manuela@thursdayconnection.org.

Teacher Biographies

This year, one of our parents suggested that we offer teacher biographies for all to browse while choosing teachers. We hope that you all find this useful as you make your decisions for next year. Many thanks to Heather Killian for the idea and for taking the time to put it together for us!

Parking Permits

We, the board of TC, have decided to implement a mandatory parking permit for each vehicle. This is is to help ensure the safety of all students at Thursday Connection. There are many people coming to and leaving the premises, and this will allow us to keep track of vehicles that are not associated with Thursday Connection. There have also been incidences of speeding in the parking lot, and we want to stress to everyone driving on the premises the utmost importance of slowing down and exercising caution. If any more incidences of speeding occur, having descriptions of cars on record will facilitate corrective action. The cost for the permits will be $5 per family per year. This is to be paid at registration. Make checks payable to Thursday Connection.

We deliberated on this for some time, and as a board felt that the possible consequences if we don't do this and someone gets hurt, outweigh the extra hassle and expense to all of us. Ten miles per hour (10 MPH) feels very slow, however, that is a standard speed limit for school zones in their immediate traffic circles. Some even have 5 mph limits.

We adults need to be extra mindful and set good examples for our children and to talk about this with our teens. Emphasizing safety pro actively before anything bad happens should help our young people learn to judge safe speeds for different situations (generally 55-65 mph for Interstates, 30-45 for highways, 20-25 for neighborhoods, and 5-10 for school parking lots where lots of children are present) and could possibly save us much sorrow and regret.

Cedar Springs Discount

Once again, Cedar Springs Christian Store will be partnering with Thursday Connection by offering our families a discount on curriculum. They will offer a 15% discount on any item required for a Thursday Connection class, 10% on everything else. Also, there is no sales tax charged on curriculum purchases. Please take the time to offer your appreciation to them when you order from them for the fall.

Registration Questions Answered

Students at Thursday Connection may take as many or as few classes as they choose; there is no minimum requirement on the number of classes taken.

Please remember that the teachers can NOT offer you a spot in their class. They do not know the most recent head counts. All registrations must be done through the Thursday Connection administration—using official drop/ add forms. If you haven’t filled out those forms, you are NOT registered for the class.

On the same note, please do not go directly to the teachers asking for scholarships. You must fill out a scholarship application. Most monies are gone for this year. The teachers all give us scholarships for the annual fund, and it is not fair for them to be approached directly by you. There are a lot of needs in our community and we try to distribute the money as fairly as possible.

Weather and Illness Reminder

If Knox County Schools close due to winter weather, we will do likewise. We do not delay if they delay-we run on a regular schedule. If they close for Flu or sickness, we do not close.
