This is an excellent site to learn about the native flora in East Tennessee, as well as some great hiking trails where you can see these flowers up close and personal.

Books for Needy Home Schoolers: Book Samaritan

Here is a site that helps needy home schoolers get curricula they need. They also accept donations of books from home schoolers who no longer need them, and provide a tax receipt. It seems to be a kind of home school 'freecycle'.

Math and the ACT

Recently I have been asked by a few families my thoughts on why their students didn't do better on the ACT in math. they did far better in the Reading department then the math even after doing well in their chosen Algebra program. After looking over the curriculum they had used and a few copies of the ACT, I have become interested in studying this a little more detail. I have also spoken with two different "experts" in the field of home schooling and helping others be successful and gained some insight from their thoughts.

I would like to look over a few more programs to develop a solution for this "problem" a little more. If you have any of the curriculums listed below and would be willing to loan them to me for about a month please email me.

Chalk Dust
Math-U-See
Teaching Textbooks
Anything else that you have used and loved or hated for that matter.

All I am looking at at this time are the high school levels, Algebra 1 and above. Most will notice that Saxon is not listed. anyone that knows me will know that I am very familiar with the Saxon program and give it a thumbs up so far in my experience. I am also familiar with ACE and Video text.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Great Turtle Race

This is a great resource for teaching about migration, especially turtle migration. You can view the great turtle race in action by visiting: http://www.greatturtlerace.com/  where the turtles' movements are updated every 10 minutes! While you're there, check out Leatherback World, with interactive animations of the challenges these turtles face along their journeys.

Zooboxes

Why not utilize one of our Zooboxes to add interest in the topic of animals or the zoo? We have Zooboxes geared for all grade levels. The Tennessee state standards are also available.

Zooboxes are virtually FREE! All that is required is a $25.00 deposit check for a 2 week use of the Zoobox. If everything is returned in good condition and on time, your check will be shredded. Zooboxes are to be picked up and returned at the Zoo Ranger Station. Zooboxes are also great to use right before a trip to the zoo.

Please call for more information and to set up your dates. For more information visit www.knoxville-zoo.org/zoobox.htm  or to reserve a Zoobox, contact Roz Gorzeman at (865) 637-5331 extension 352 or rgorzeman@knoxville-zoo.org.
