Tennessee Home Educators Area Resource Center

The Home School Resource Center

The Dream

We are currently seeking a building to use as our own, that we could make available to other home school groups as well.

Some of what we envision:
20 classrooms-300 square feet each, 3 of them larger for art, music, and science labs
Storage available in rooms
Gym-2 full basketball courts
Kitchen and Fellowship area
Library
Work area for teachers and office staff Parking Playground and field area

We visualize that such a building could be partially, and eventually fully, supported from a combination of revenue sources that might include a bookstore, cafe, Curves for Women (R) (for the moms-a very successful workout franchise for women), user fees for building, user fees for lending library, and rent from an annual conference or home school curriculum conference. Eagle Scout projects could be available to develop playing fields and pavilions.

Patterns of Success

Although this dream was born locally, we have found that others in various areas of the country have had similar ideas and have already seen them brought into reality. There are two buildings in Michigan, one in Oklahoma, and one in Texas. Upon talking to their administrators, we have found that the buildings have become the "hub" of their home school communities.

In addition to housing the cooperative classes, the buildings have allowed the home school communities to develop quite extensive fine arts and sports programs, as well as speech and debate clubs, science clubs, and scholarship competition clubs. For example one club in Michigan has an entire day each week devoted to band and orchestras-marching band, symphony, jazz band, orchestra-all different levels throughout the building all day. On another day the focus is drama and musical theater.

They have a book and curriculum store on site that is a place where experienced home school moms and dads can offer advice to the new home schoolers. This enterprise generates extensive revenue, which partially funds the operation of the building. They also have lounge areas for moms and children to socialize with one another (this is where we envision a coffee or café shop).
