Thursday Connection New Building OptionDear Families, As you may know, it has been our dream and vision to one day acquire a building that would not only house Thursday Connection but also provide needed space for other non-profit organizations in our area. We have called this building the East Tennessee Area Homeschool Resource Center (ARC). We have a unique opportunity to achieve this dream but we need your help. “How?” you may ask. An opportunity to purchase a building in a prime location has come to us. It has 33,000 square feet, ample room for many uses. The bank requires 10% down and someone willing to co-sign as a guarantor of payment. We are therefore seeking a family or families who might see this as an opportunity to see our program grow as well as a personal business opportunity. If you think you may be interested in investing in the Knoxville Community, please contact me at emfleenor@charter.net. Thanks for your interest, Beth for the Thursday Connection Board The Home School Resource CenterThe DreamWe are currently seeking a building to use as our own, that we could make available to other home school groups as well. Some of what we envision: We visualize that such a building could be partially, and eventually fully, supported from a combination of revenue sources that might include a bookstore, cafe, Curves for Women (R) (for the moms-a very successful workout franchise for women), user fees for building, user fees for lending library, and rent from an annual conference or home school curriculum conference. Eagle Scout projects could be available to develop playing fields and pavilions. Patterns of SuccessAlthough this dream was born locally, we have found that others in various areas of the country have had similar ideas and have already seen them brought into reality. There are two buildings in Michigan, one in Oklahoma, and one in Texas. Upon talking to their administrators, we have found that the buildings have become the "hub" of their home school communities. In addition to housing the cooperative classes, the buildings have allowed the home school communities to develop quite extensive fine arts and sports programs, as well as speech and debate clubs, science clubs, and scholarship competition clubs. For example one club in Michigan has an entire day each week devoted to band and orchestras-marching band, symphony, jazz band, orchestra-all different levels throughout the building all day. On another day the focus is drama and musical theater. They have a book and curriculum store on site that is a place where experienced home school moms and dads can offer advice to the new home schoolers. This enterprise generates extensive revenue, which partially funds the operation of the building. They also have lounge areas for moms and children to socialize with one another (this is where we envision a coffee or café shop).
