Home School Workshop on Private College Admission

The Berry College Office of Admissions is hosting a workshop for homeschool students and parents interested in private colleges! Please forward to those who might be interested.

The event, For Homeschoolers Only: An Insider's Guide to the Private College Admission Process, will be held on the Berry College campus in Rome, Georgia, on Wednesday, July 28. The program will run from 10:00am to 4:00pm Eastern Time. There is no cost to attend, though advanced online registration is requested.

This workshop will help students and parents prepare for their college search and provide information on what to expect in the application and scholarship/financial process. Guests will also have the opportunity to enjoy lunch in our student center, participate in a mock admission committee and ask questions. Those guests who are specifically interested in Berry College will be able to join a student-led tour.

For more information about the workshop and to register to attend, please visit: http://www.berry.edu/admissions/homeschoolworkshop/

Math Evaluation

Dear parents,

Is your child ready for the rigorous new math requirements for a high school diploma?

As most of you are aware, the state of Tennessee has raised the math requirements for receiving a high school diploma. Accordingly, most umbrella schools have adjusted their requirements. In order to prepare their students for the new high school requirements, many school districts have changed their teaching strategies for the lower levels of math as well. At Thursday Connection, we want to act proactively to make sure our students are prepared for math in the high school years. Our students come to us from many backgrounds and varied curriculum. Some are quite ready for the next level; others start a course and find they are not prepared enough to do well. Beginning a year with a solid knowledge of the basic skills will enable a student to succeed right from the start.

In an effort to help parents identify skills that their student may need to focus on to prepare him/her for the next level of math, we have developed a skills evaluation. This has been designed as a diagnostic tool whose purpose is to help identify any skills that may need reinforcing over the remainder of the semester or perhaps during the summer. We want to make sure that we are setting our students up for success. We strongly urge parents of students who will be taking a math course at TC for the first time (other than enrichment classes) to have their student take the evaluation so areas of weakness can be worked on before they start next year. By preparing them ahead of time, we can help them make the transition to the next level and help them move ahead with confidence.

We are making this evaluation available for students to take in the TC library on Thursdays during normal school hours. It will not be timed and there are no multiple choice questions. There are just straight forward questions checking for the basic math skills which are needed for success in higher math classes. It is to be taken without the use of a calculator and without assistance from a parent. The students will be asked to show their work, as we will not just simply mark the problems right or wrong. We want to include feed back to help you evaluate the mistakes that are being made to better help you address any problem areas. It has been broken into levels so that it can be given to those entering pre-algebra, Algebra 1, or Algebra 2.

This evaluation is not intended to prevent your student from taking the level of math that he/she needs. Rather, it is to give you a “heads-up” if your student is weak in any of the basic skills needed for that level. Even if you do not plan to sign your student up for a math class at TC next year, you can still have them take the skills evaluation just to get an idea of things you may need to focus attention on to allow your child to be successful in high school math.

Sincerely,
Michelle Rosenbaum and Marilyn Corwin
