2008 SMHEA Science FairThe Science Fair was held Saturday, February 16, at Pellissippi State Technical Community College in the Student Lounge of the Goins building. Why Do A Science Project? Why Enter A Science Fair?A science fair project is the ultimate answer to the often asked question: "Why do I need to learn this stuff, anyway?!" A science project brings together many different school subjects into one exciting activity. What better way to teach reading, writing, spelling, math, computer skills, graphic arts, and public speaking than in a hands-on project with a subject chosen by the student? A science fair project can boost self esteem and encourage self motivation. Once the research has begun students often desire to learn and do more on their own. Finally, science fair projects can lead to prizes including cash and scholarships as well as opening the door to other academic possibilities. Colleges and universities are looking for young people who have excelled in more than just grades and test scores. An award from a local, regional, and especially an international science fair (hey, let's set our sights high!) is something the student can proudly record on a high school transcript. For more information on science fair projects check out the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair website at www.sciserv.org/isef.
