Student Showcases and Performances

Thursday Connection Newspaper

The Media class at Thursday Connection is producing a newspaper as their major project for this semester. It will be a whopping 16 pages thick and full of stories about TC students and articles about things of interest to TC students and their parents. Publication date - end of November.

The cover price will be 50 cents BUT if you pre-pay you will get one for ONLY 25 cents!! Order forms are available each week in the mom's room (please leave the money in an envelope) or email Samantha Horne (sassysthebest@yahoo.com) to make arrangements to meet one of our 'staff' at TC. There will be students selling in the break room for the next few weeks as well. You will want to buy copies for each of your children and grandparents as we hope to include most TC students somewhere in the pages of the paper.

We plan to have at least one page of Classifieds. Do you have a service to sell? Do your children babysit? Have unwanted curriculum? Video Games? Want to advertise a club or other activity? The cost is just 50 cents for 10 words (excluding your name, email and phone number). Email Jaron Cook (jaronmcook@gmail.com) to place your classified.

And - do you own a business. Our extremely competitive rates make advertising in our newspaper an appealing proposition. Starting price is $5 for a 2 X 2 inch advert ($10 for 3 X 3 inch, $15 for 4 X 4 etc). We will be producing at least 300 papers, and these will not be thrown away as regular papers are, but will still be working for you for years to come, as students and parents and grandparents go back to read and look at photos again and again. Email Jaron Cook (jaronmcook@gmail.com) to reserve space.

Payment for newspapers, classifieds and advertisements can be made in cash, check (make out to Meryl van der Merwe) or PayPal (merylvdm@gmail.com). The class are doing this as a business venture to teach them how the Media works.

Finally, do you have any news we should include in the paper, or do your children like to write? Please send any leads or articles to our editor, Elizabeth Gonzalez (iloveyorkies12@hotmail.com). We would love to include submissions from TC students not in our class. We are interested in interesting hobbies TC students have, funny things that have happened at TC, awards students have won, businesses TC students have started etc. You don't have to write the articles - just send info to our editor and she can put a reporter on to the story. Photographs should be emailed to Jason van der Merwe (coolpapajase@hotmail.com).

Feel free to email me with any questions. Meryl van der Merwe Mastering Media teacher merylvdm@gmail.com

American Math Contest

Cedar Springs Homeschool group will once more participate in the American Math Contest this year and we invite any homeschoolers in our area to join us.

This test focuses on thinking outside the box and challenges students to see if they can apply the math they have learnt. There is just one test for all grades, so 5th graders who take this should be reasonably strong in math. It is a good idea to start young so as to score well by 8th grade. For all the details go to www.unl.edu/amc/e-exams/e4-amc08/amc8.shtml.

Top scorers in our group will be awarded gold, silver and bronze certificates. The top scorers nation wide make the Honors Roll (we have had one student from our group achieve this)

Date: Tues Nov 18, 9am.

Venue: Room D203 above the gym at Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church (directions at www.cspc.net)

The test takes 40 minutes and consists of 25 multiple-choice questions (no penalty for guessing).

Cost: $5 for members of Cedar Springs Homeschool Group; $8 for non-members (you are welcome to tell any homeschoolers in our area about this). Copies of past tests can be provided.

Deadline to register and pay: October 18th : email Meryl van der Merwe (merylvdm@gmail.com) your child's name and grade.

You need to mail a check made out to Cedar Springs Homeschool to Lea Bosse, 910 Victory Trail Jefferson City, TN 37760 or pay by PayPal to cspchomeschool@gmail.com.
